There is a standard list of things people check on a watch listing, and most of it is close to useless. Engravings, serial numbers, packaging and logo sharpness are all cheap to reproduce precisely because they are simple features. They tell you a workshop owns marking equipment. They tell you nothing about whether it can set a stone.
These six points are different. Each one costs real money and real process control to get right, which is exactly why they separate pieces.
1. Dial layer depth
The most revealing check, and the first one to make.
Mother-of-pearl and hardstone refract light through structures inside the material. Rotate a real stone dial and the colour moves - pink at one angle, green at another, with grain visibly running in one direction. A printed or coated dial cannot do this, because there is nothing underneath the surface to refract.
How to check: ask for the same dial photographed at three angles in natural daylight, no flash. Real material gives you three different-looking photographs. Printed material gives you the same photograph three times.
2. Bead border roundness
Any Alhambra-derived motif is defined by the bead surround around its edge. Each bead should read as a sphere with light catching a distinct highlight on its curve. Cheap execution produces bumps - shapes with a raised centre but no true spherical form, so the highlight smears instead of sitting as a point.
How to check: a macro of the motif edge. Look for a distinct highlight per bead, and consistent bead diameter all the way round.
3. Motif lobe symmetry
A clover motif has four lobes and four valleys between them. The valleys are where quality shows: they should be defined and equal, and the four lobes should be the same size and shape as each other.
Stamped or worn tooling softens the valleys first. Once they round off, the motif loses its outline and stops reading as Alhambra from any distance - which defeats the entire purpose of the piece.
4. Bracelet link pin fit
A motif bracelet should behave like a jewellery chain: each element pivoting freely against its neighbour, the whole thing falling in a smooth curve.
Pin fit is the mechanical detail behind this. Too loose and you see gaps between links and feel rattle. Too tight and the bracelet binds, producing a flat spot where it refuses to bend.
How to check: ask for the bracelet laid in a curve on a flat surface. A good one is a continuous arc. Any straight segment in that arc is a binding point.
5. Case radius transitions
Where a case changes direction - flank into lug, case into bezel - there is a radius. On well-made pieces those radii are consistent and the transitions are crisp. On poorly made ones they vary around the case, because the tooling was worn or the polishing was rushed.
This is subtle in photographs but visible in hand, and it is a good proxy for how much process control went into the whole piece.
How to check: a three-quarter angle shot, not straight-on. Straight-on photographs conceal both case thickness and radius quality at once, which is why weaker listings tend to consist entirely of them.
6. Clasp engagement
A clasp should close with a defined, positive click and hold with no play. This is a spring-and-tolerance problem, and it is the component most often left until last.
A clasp that needs persuading to close, or that shifts once closed, will not improve. It is also the failure that actually loses pieces off wrists.
Working the list in order
Do not treat these as six equal checks. They are ordered by how much each reveals per minute spent:
- Dial layers - settles most listings on its own
- Bead border - the motif's whole legibility
- Lobe symmetry - closely related, check together
- Link pin fit - comfort and drape
- Case radii - a proxy for overall process control
- Clasp - hard to judge remotely, verify on arrival
If the first three are right, the piece is almost certainly worth considering. If the first one is wrong, the rest is decoration.
What each failure feels like after a month
Inspection catches problems at the point of purchase. It is worth also knowing how each failure behaves over time, because some are cosmetic and some get worse.
- A printed dial does not degrade - it simply never looked right, and you notice it more as you get used to the piece rather than less. This is the failure people quietly stop wearing.
- A soft bead border is stable but flattening. The piece reads as generic jewellery rather than as the design it is referencing, and no amount of wear changes that either way.
- Loose link pins get worse. Play between links accelerates wear at the pivot, so a bracelet that rattles slightly at week one rattles more at month six, and eventually a link separates.
- Tight link pins also get worse, differently: the binding point wears unevenly and eventually leaves a visible kink in the drape.
- Poor case radii stay as they are, but thin plating on a sharp transition wears through first - so radius quality and plating longevity are related in practice.
- A weak clasp is the one that actually loses pieces. It never improves with use.
Ranked by consequence rather than by visibility, the clasp and the link pins deserve more attention than they usually get, because they are the two failures that end with a piece on the floor.
Judging a seller from how they answer
The replies to an inspection request carry information beyond their content.
Speed relative to effort. A seller who returns four new photographs within a day is photographing stock they hold. A seller who takes a week is likely sourcing the item after your order, which changes what you are actually buying.
Whether the photographs are new. Ask for the dial at three angles and see whether you receive three fresh frames or three crops of an existing image. Crops are easy to spot: identical lighting, identical reflections, identical dust.
Willingness to say what something is not. A seller who tells you plainly that a dial is printed rather than natural stone is more useful than one who calls everything premium. Accurate description of a modest piece is a better signal than flattering description of an unknown one.
A note on what inspection cannot do
Be realistic about the ceiling here. A careful inspection reliably separates poor pieces from decent ones. It does not let you grade decent pieces against each other at a distance, and it cannot tell you how a plating will look after a year.

The message to send
Could you send: the dial at three angles in natural daylight, a macro of the motif border, the bracelet laid in a curve, and a three-quarter angle of the case? Also, what is the dial made from, and what are the case dimensions in millimetres?

Check the three things photographs could not show: clasp action, edge smoothness around the case and clasp, and the dial in daylight by a window.
